JOSEP MARIA CARBÓ
I was born in Premià de Mar, Barcelona, in 1972.
I’m a self-taught artist and an art lover.
When I was a child, there were eight cousins at home and three grandmothers to take care of us. We were lucky, they were extraordinary artistic and talented women: to keep us busy, we spent time drawing and painting together.
All through my childhood and my youth I drew and painted, in notebooks, schoolbooks and any spare paper I could find.
Painting is a chill out activity for me. Drawing is a decompression valve that allows me to isolate myself from the world for hours… As much as possible I try to stay true to this principle: I paint what I like.
In recent years my painting has evolved, as I worked hard on the aspects that were more difficult for me: I started painting portraits, because capturing the essence in people’s faces seemed difficult for me. Later I evolved towards the human body as a whole, especially of the female figure, trying to make sensual but always elegant drawings.
Progressing through each of these stages is at the same time rewarding and unsettling: I know what I want to achieve. However, when I start working it’s hard to know what the result will be.
I take images as references and I start to play with them, changing the light and the volumes.
Pencil and watercolors are the tools that allow me to experiment and evolve, playing with lights and shadows, using the rigidity of the stroke and the softness of the colors.
Here you can find a sample of the watercolors I made in recent years.
I hope you like them. If at the same time some of them arise special feelings in you, a large part of what I am looking for would have been achieved.
Enjoy! Keep calm and draw!
